Hiya, true believers! This week, we're showing a more recent film than our last exploit, Dr. Strangelove - and it's of a type that I most exuberantly enjoy - a story with more twists and turns than the St. Lawrence, He Loves Me... He Loves Me Not!
The setup is simple enough: Lead actress Audrey Tautou plays Angélique, a very successful art student, who is trying to seduce the married cardiologist Loïc away from his (pregnant) wife.
The plot twists just skyrocket from there, but I can point out something even from that paltry description that you might miss: The movie opens with following the seductress, not the seduced: it's her actions, her life. That doesn't seem so out there that it's never happened before, but ... I can't think of any examples of that off the top of my head.
It's shaping up to be a great Friday! Remember, we're in the Electronic Classroom every Friday, so drop by if you wanna get in on watching this fantastic foreign film.
Great news, everybody. Our second showing of the year, following up from The Incredibles, is going to be a movie I've personally been itching to see, director and general crazy-awesome-guy Stanley Kubrick's Dr. Strangelove.
Of course, we're not going to spoil the plot here, but for anyone who wants a frame of reference, Stanley Kubrick was also the guy who directed A Clockwork Orange, The Shining, and the original 2001: A Space Odyssey. So if you enjoyed any of those movies, come see Dr. Strangelove with us. We can practically guarantee you'll love it. :)
We don't exactly have a need for officers due to the small size of the club, just yet, but we're amenable to suggestions in the presence of growth.
- Mr. Huben is our faculty adviser, also a masterful teacher of Computer Science and ham extraordinaire. He's definitely one of the more fun teachers in the school to talk to! And he has his own wiki, how cool is that? You can usually find him in room 306.
- Andrew Quinn and Natalie Nowel, homerooms 137 and 136 respectively, we're the co-heads of the club. (We like to use the titles "Foremost" and "Hindmost" when asked for official ones, but just who's who is a mystery for the ages.) Natalie's the more knowledgeable about films in general, but we're both pretty solid in what we know, and we're tropers as well.
- Mir Tamim-Karim is our Hazing Officer, and were there ever a problem with it, he'd be the guy I'd want to talk to, definitely. He's quite a cool cat when you get to know him, and he's the guy who basically saved our bacon at the Extracurricular Fair by coordinating making the poster at the last second (what can I say, I was out sick! (and so was I!)). Although for some reason, I don't remember his homeroom, so -- Mir! When you read this, add it! Haha!
Hey! Welcome to the Boston Latin School Film Club blog, the place where we post information about club activities for the whole world to see.
Lemme start off by telling you a little bit about Film Club. Film Club is one of those tenacious little groups, that doesn't have too many members, but always has enough to survive to the next year - and the members often make good friends with one another, because they're all there for a common purpose: Watching films!
Or that was the common purpose. Don't get me wrong, we're still showing films every Friday in the Electronic Classroom, but due to the more enterprising spirit of the more recent additions to the club, chances are that over the year, we're going to get more involved in the production of films as well. It makes sense - there doesn't seem to be another club for that niche yet, and there's quite a bit that goes into the making of all sorts of films!
But that's a plan for later on in the year. Right now, we want to show films that are (1) fun to watch and (2) historically significant if possible. "Historically significant" here means that films which have had a gestation period with the critics are the ripest fruit on the tree for us -- at the time of writing, we're looking forward to watching Dr. Strangelove for an example. Moreover, we're receptive to suggestions as long as it doesn't devolve into the case where one guy who never shows up recommends a thousand and a half movies. (Except the "half" movie is Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog, which we'd love to show anyway.)
